A jewel in the crown of British Jazz for many years, but unrecorded since 1994, With a Song in My Heart saw Gill Manly make a welcome and decisive return to the studio. Gill Manly is a jazz singer who has been described as 'an amalgam of Bessie Smith and Sarah Vaughan.' Her debut album on Linn, With a Song in My Heart, features performances by trumpeter Guy Barker and singer Mark Murphy. A stalwart of London's live music scene for many years, Gill Manly has returned to the recording studio due to popular demand from champions such as Mark Murphy. With a Song in My Heart reflects a period of maturation and reflection. It is a gentle and flawless selection of jazz standards enhanced by the virtuoso playing of Guy Barker on trumpet. With a Song in My Heart sees Manly reclaim her place amongst the current jazz vocalists who have long cited her as an inspiration and a unique interpreter of the jazz singers' vast cannon.
Gill Manly writes...
This album could only have come to me by the grace, kindness and encouragement of the following people: Simon Wallace, Sarah Moule, Mike Kear, Paul Oxley, Robert Taylor, Claire Martin, Fran Landesman, Ian Shaw, Barb Jungr, Mark Murphy, Steven Warren, Carolyn Cowan, Jimmy Gallagher, Helena Paul, Spikey and the family, Dave Benn, The Fabulous Crew at The Dippy Egg Café and all the beautiful souls of the RVT of which there are too many to list but are remembered including Adrian Pagan. Thank you.
Enjoy! The music is from the heart, the songs are from the heart.
