To mark the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth, Cappella Mediterranea wishes to pay homage to Monteverdi in a programme of compositions on the universal theme of the sins and the virtues, which is a constant in his operas, his madrigals and the Selva morale. In L’Incoronazione di Poppea – perhaps the most amoral opera in the history of music – he represents vice and its associated emotions; but he also offers a virtuous counterpart, a moral remedy to vice, in the madrigals of the Selva morale. This was the perspective in which I devised the project.
