Selected Songs Mai op. 1/2 (Victor Hugo), Au bord de l'eau op. 8/1 (Sully Prudhomme), Les Berceaux op 23/1 (Sully Prudhomme), Au cimetierre op. 51/2 (Jean Richepin), En Prière (Stéphane Brodse), Poême d'un jour op. 21 (Charles Grandmougin), L'horizon chimérique op. 118 (Jean de la Ville de Mirmont), La Bonne Chanson op. 61 (Paul Verlaine), Jan VAN DER CRABBEN, Baritone; Inge SPINETTE, piano. Jan Van Der Crabben's first CD of french melodies , Le Promenoir des deux amants, released by Explicit! in 2001, attracted much attention and yielded the young Belgian baritone a Choc by the French magazine Le Monde de la Musique and the Solti Award of the Acadmie du Disque lyrique . Here he is back, with his partner Inge Spinette, in the Explicit! collection of Fuga Libera, still more sparkling with charm, elegancy and simplicity. This new recording concentrates on Fauré's songs ; one will find here, besides some of the composer's early successes, three cycles that reveal Fauré's genius at three stages of his long artistic carreer : the effusive Poême d'un jour, the summit of his verlainian works La Bonne Chanson, and the ultimate cycle, the deeply moving Horizon chimérique. Here is a CD that could reshape the recent Faurean discography, thanks an interpretative conception that does not forget the tradition but cleans it in the most welcome way.
