Following the exceptional success of its debut album the Maxwell Quartet returns with its second recording of Haydn. The intriguing juxtaposition of Haydn string quartets with traditional Scottish folk music once again forms the basis of the programme. MusicWeb International named Haydn: String Quartets Op. 71 as one of its Recordings of the Year stating: ‘... letting this superb playing simply wash over you has been one of the year’s great pleasures.’ The prize-winning quartet is performing Haydn’s Op. 74 and their selection of folk music will include traditional tunes from the Highlands and Shetland plus music by Niel Gow, Jean Finlayson of Lewis and Isaac Cooper of Banff. Following the Maxwell’s performance of Haydn’s String Quartet in F, Op. 74 No. 2 at the 2020 Edinburgh International Festival The Scotsman wrote: ‘Such distinctive ¬personality informed Tuesday’s opening performance … its finely tailored Classicism enlivened with light-hearted repartee and risky spontaneity.’

"The Haydn performances are a paragon of stylistic finesse, the Maxwell's crisp precision complemented by moments of aching tenderness. They get to the heart and soul of Haydn's paradoxical affections. The quirky Scots stuff is the icing on the cake. "
The Scotsman
"The magic of this album is the way these two musical traditions knit so effectively together."
Voxcarnyx.com
"The young Scottish quartet continues its engaging exploration of Haydn's later quartets, imaginatively paired with folk music from Scotland"

The Scotsman
"Even without the folk injections this album would remain remarkable for the joy and energy of these Scottish musicians, ideal interpreters of Haydn's mischievous jokes, sudden mood swings and lyrical ingenuity."
The Times
"(…) the Maxwell Quartet respond eagerly to the boldness and brilliance of these predominantly extrovert works."
Gramophone
"(…) the Maxwell Quartet's readings brilliantly bring both folk vim to the salon and classical elegance to the barn dance through some luminously stringy-toned and technically superlative playing. "
