"A Sunday in Leipzig" , the latest release in the Ricercar collection ...

The composition of a new cantata for each successive Sunday was seen as normal practice for both Kapellmeistern and cantors and was therefore regarded as a matter of course when Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed cantor of the Thomaskirche in May 1723.Although Bach composed many works of unequalled genius during his Leipzig years, in the end he did not completely fulfil the terms of his contract: at the beginning of his employment he often resorted to material that he had previously used, whilst works by other composers were performed more and more frequently from 1725 onwards. These were sometimes performed unchanged, although they were often altered or corrected in minor ways; sometimes he would also compose additional music for them. From a modern viewpoint, all of these works have gone up in our estimation: they were, after all, good enough for Bach to perform them in the renowned Thomaskirche. This recording brings together several works that have come down to us in this manner, notably a Missa brevis (1716) by Johann Ludwig Bach as well as compositions by two of his pupils: these consist of two cantatas composed between 1742-1745 by Johann Gottlieb Goldberg and a Magnificat by Johann Ludwig Krebs.

"Banalités" from Thomas Blondelle is coming out in the Fuga Libera collection!

Tags: Outhere - Published on Thursday 19 April 2012 - Elise

Thomas Blondelle, who finished second in the prestigious Concours Reine Elisabeth 2011, was chosen by the competition’s partner BNP Paribas Fortis to record a song recital and give concerts on tour throughout Belgium and elsewhere. With the pianist Daniel Blumenthal – the ideal partner for any young singer – he presents a program of humorous French and German art songs, some of which nevertheless have an underlying seriousness. This unusual and witty recital has been put together very intelligently!
